Catherine The Great was not a Russian. She was a German princess. She married the man who would become Czar Peter III. Prior to his becoming czar, Catherine was well liked in the government cirlces of St. Petersburg, and the military. She deposed her weak husband, and set aside her son, who was the legal heir, although questions about the boy's paternity persisted. The son, Paul, had to wait almost 35 years to become czar, and he had mental problems.
